Howard University, 1914.During the formation of Delta Sigma Theta, the twenty- two founders had support and influence from a great leader from the Women's Suffrage Movement. Mary Church Terrell was a prominent public figure in Washington, DC. in the early 1900's. She assisted in the formation of the sorority, by contributing her prestige in sponsorship and the writing of the Delta Oath.
The Delta Oath expresses the fundamental morals and values of the organization. Terrell voiced in the oath that each member has a duty to the organization and public service to the community because of their high academic achievement. The Delta Oath and the sorority is a reflection of Mary Church Terrell's dedication to activism and sponsorship. The Delta Oath is only taught and recited to prospective and current members. |
